Functional behavior assessment
Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) are assessments used to determine the causes behind reoccurring behavioral problems. First, the negative behaviors are identified. Once they are identified, the FBA tries to find the underlying cause of the behavior so the teacher and find the best possible solution to this problem. These should always be done before completing Behavior Plans so there is documentation of the negative behavior to refer back to when creating the plan.
Behavior Plans
Behavior Plans (BP) are necessary when a students poor behavior is negatively effecting their school work. Once the FBA has determined the cause of the behavior, a BP is created to find the best way to deal with this problem. The current behavior is stated and a positive replacement behavior goal is set. The BP also states the steps, accommodations and procedures that will be taken to help the student achieve this goal. It is important to understand the new behavior does not magically happen over night. If the new behavior requires learning a new skill, the BP will outline the steps needed to teach this skill to the student. If it is determined the student will receive any sort of accommodations, these must also be outlined in the BP. Finally, the procedure used to measure the student's progress will also be stated in the BP. After the designated amount of time, more FBAs will be administered to see if the student has met his or her goal. At this time, the BP will be reviewed and revised.
