seclusion and Restraint
Seclusion and Restraint are two controversial topics in the education world. They are two safety precautions used by teachers and administrators when they feel students are acting in a way that may hurt themselves or others. These methods should only be used in the most extreme circumstances, and there are strict guidelines as to how, when, where, and who can use them.
Seclusion
Seclusion is a technique that is used when students are a danger to themselves or others. Again, this is only to be used in the most extreme circumstances. The student is removed from the classroom and placed in a separate room by themselves and an adult for supervision. In elementary school this should not last longer than 15 minutes, and in high school no more than 20 minutes. This is not a "time-out" or punishment, this is a safety precaution that allows the student time to cool down and deescalate the situation
Restraint
Restraint is a technique used when a student is becoming a physical threat to themselves and those around them. Like seclusion, this should only be used in the most extreme circumstances. An adult may restrain a student's head, legs, arms, or entire body. Once the student has calmed down restraint may no longer be used. Restraint should never harm the student of affect his or her breathing.
